Dear Reader Letter
A note before you begin
Dear Reader,
When I started researching media censorship in Russia, I knew the topic was important, but I did not realize how much it would make me think about the role information plays in everyday life. We often take access to news, different opinions, and open discussion for granted. Through this project, I learned how government restrictions can influence what people see, hear, and understand about the world around them.
One of the most interesting parts of this research was learning about the different perspectives surrounding censorship. Some argue that restrictions help maintain stability and prevent harmful information from spreading, while others believe they limit freedom and make it harder for citizens to access a variety of viewpoints. Looking at these different perspectives challenged me to think critically about the balance between security, government control, and individual rights.
Creating the artwork that accompanies this research helped me visualize these ideas in a more powerful way. The redacted newspaper represents information that has been hidden from the public, while the censored photograph symbolizes stories and events that may never be fully seen. The tied fist represents freedoms and rights being restricted, emphasizing how control over information can also affect people's ability to express themselves and make informed decisions.
My goal is not to tell you what to think, but to encourage you to consider how access to information shapes our understanding of reality. As you read my research and examine my artwork, I hope you reflect on the importance of freedom, transparency, and the impact that censorship can have on individuals and society.
Sincerely,
Emiliia Kharis
